Custom Fishing Lure Molds: Your Complete Guide to OEM Development

What Is OEM Lure Manufacturing?
OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturing. In the fishing lure context, it means you provide the design specifications and a manufacturer produces the finished product under your brand name. The mold belongs to you (or you have exclusive rights), and the lure design is yours alone.
This is different from private labeling, where you take an existing mold design and customize only the color and packaging. With OEM, you own the product design itself.
Step 1: Concept and Design
Every great lure starts with a clear concept. You might come to a manufacturer with:
- Technical drawings or CAD files — ideal if you have engineering resources
- Reference samples — an existing lure you want to improve or adapt
- Written specifications — target weight, length, action type, diving depth
- A verbal description — some of our best projects started with "I need a lure that does X"
The R&D team at GD Angling Tackle has over 15 years of lure design experience. We can take your rough concept and develop it into a manufacturable design, advising on body shape, bib angle, weight distribution, and hardware selection to achieve the swimming action you want.

Step 2: Mold Engineering and Fabrication
Once the design is finalized, the mold-making process begins. This is the most technical and expensive phase, but also the most crucial for product quality.
A typical fishing lure mold involves:
- Steel or aluminum mold base — steel lasts longer (100,000+ cycles), aluminum is faster and cheaper for smaller runs
- Cavity machining — CNC milling or EDM to create the exact lure shape
- Gate and runner design — how the molten plastic flows into the cavity
- Cooling channel layout — determines cycle time and consistency
- Ejection system — how the finished part is removed from the mold
Mold development typically takes 15-30 days depending on complexity. A single-cavity mold for a simple hard bait costs between $500 and $3,000. Multi-cavity molds cost more per cavity but reduce the per-unit production cost significantly.
Step 3: Sample Production and Testing
Before full production begins, your manufacturer should produce samples from the new mold. This is when the design becomes a physical object for the first time.
Key testing points at this stage:
- Swimming action test — the lure must perform as designed in water
- Buoyancy and balance check — correct sink rate or floating position
- Dimensional accuracy — does the molded part match the design spec?
- Assembly fit — do bibs, hooks, rings, and split rings fit correctly?
At GD Angling Tackle, every new design goes through rigorous hydrodynamic testing. If the swimming action isn't right, we adjust before moving to mass production. This saves time and money for both sides.

Step 4: Mass Production
Once the sample is approved, full production begins. A well-managed production run covers:
- Injection molding of lure bodies
- Painting and finishing (airbrush, dip, or spray based on your design)
- Hardware assembly (hooks, split rings, bibs)
- Packaging with your brand materials
- Final QC inspection before shipment
With engineers monitoring every stage, GD Angling Tackle ensures consistency from the first piece to the ten-thousandth.
Cost Considerations for Mold Development
Here's a realistic budget breakdown for a typical custom hard bait mold project:
| Item | Estimated Cost | One-Time or Recurring |
|---|---|---|
| Mold design and engineering | $200 - $800 | One-time |
| Single-cavity steel mold | $800 - $3,000 | One-time |
| Sample production (1st batch) | $50 - $200 | One-time (often refundable) |
| Production per unit | $0.50 - $3.00 | Per order |
Many mold costs can be partially or fully offset against your first production order. Always clarify this during negotiation.
Choosing the Right OEM Partner
The best OEM partners combine technical capability with communication transparency. Look for a manufacturer who can show you past mold projects, explain their process clearly, and offer guidance on design optimization. At GD Angling Tackle, we've helped dozens of brands bring their unique lure designs to life — from simple hard baits to complex multi-piece swimmers.
