Fishing Lure Hooks: The Complete Guide to Treble Hooks, Single Hooks, and Hook Selection

2026-05-20 | GD Angling Tackle

The hook is the only part of your lure that actually connects you to the fish. You can have the most beautiful, perfectly swimming lure in the world — but if the hook is dull, too small, or of poor quality, you'll lose fish after fish. Hooks matter more than most anglers realize.

In this guide, we'll cover everything about fishing lure hooks: types, sizes, materials, sharpness, and when to upgrade or replace them.

Hook Types for Hard Lures

Treble Hooks (3 Points)

The standard hook configuration for most hard baits. Three points facing outward from a single eye give a high hookup percentage on aggressive strikes.

FeatureDetails
Hookup rateHigh — three points catch fish from any angle
Best forCrankbaits, minnows, poppers, pencil lures
DownsideMore snag-prone; harder to unhook fish; can damage fish for catch-and-release
Standard sizes#2, #4, #6 (most common); #8, #10 for small lures

Single Hooks (1 Point)

Increasingly popular for catch-and-release fishing and heavy cover situations. A single hook reduces snagging and fish injury.

FeatureDetails
Hookup rateLower than treble — requires more precise hookset
Best forHeavy cover (weeds, timber), catch-and-release, toothy fish
DownsideLower hookup percentage; requires more aggressive hookset
Standard sizes#1, #2, #4 (most common)

Double Hooks (2 Points)

A middle ground between treble and single. Two inline points provide better hookup rate than single while reducing snagging compared to treble.

Hook Size Selection

Hook size must be proportional to the lure size and the target species:

Lure SizeRecommended Treble Hook SizeTarget Species
35-45mm (micro/small)#8 - #10Panfish, small trout, crappie
50-65mm (small/medium)#6 - #8Trout, smallmouth bass, panfish
65-80mm (medium)#4 - #6Largemouth bass, walleye, spotted bass
80-100mm (medium/large)#2 - #4Largemouth bass, pike, striped bass
100mm+ (large)#1 - #2Pike, musky, trophy bass

Too large: Hook overwhelms the lure, ruins the action, and spooks fish.

Too small: Fish pull free because the hook doesn't reach the jaw.

Hook Point Styles

  • Standard (Cut Point): Most common, sharp out of the package, easy to resharpen. Used on most GD Angling Tackle lures
  • Needle Point: Extra-long, fine point for quick penetration. Popular for tournament fishing
  • Spear Point: Strong but slightly less sharp. Good for rocky conditions where hooks get dulled
  • Offset/Barbed: Barb prevents fish from shaking free. Required in some regions. Note: barbless hooks are required in some fisheries

When to Replace Hooks

Check your hooks regularly and replace them when:

  • Points are visibly dull (test by dragging across your thumbnail — if it slides without catching, it's dull)
  • Points are bent or curled
  • Rust spots are visible (even small rust patches weaken the hook)
  • Split rings are opened, stretched, or corroded
  • After landing a toothy fish (pike, musky) — their teeth damage hooks significantly
