Pencil Lures: Master the Walk-the-Dog Technique for Explosive Topwater Strikes
2026-05-20 | GD Angling Tackle

Among all topwater techniques, the walk-the-dog retrieve with a pencil lure is perhaps the most effective — and the most misunderstood. When done correctly, a pencil lure darts side-to-side across the surface in an erratic zigzag pattern that perfectly mimics a wounded baitfish. And when a bass finally commits to the strike, it's the most violent explosion in freshwater fishing.
At GD Angling Tackle, our pencil lure line includes three distinct models designed for different situations. In this guide, we'll teach you the walk-the-dog technique step-by-step and show you when and where to deploy each model.
What Is a Pencil Lure?
A pencil lure (also called a stick bait or stick lure) is a cylindrical, cigar-shaped topwater lure with no lip, no cup, and no built-in action mechanism. Unlike poppers that create their own surface commotion, pencil lures rely entirely on the angler's rod technique to create movement.
This is what makes them so effective — you control the action. You can make them dart, pause, twitch, zigzag, or lie still on the surface. This level of control allows you to match the mood of the fish.
GD Angling Tackle Pencil Lure Models
| Model | Size | Type | Best Application |
|---|---|---|---|
| GDFK02 | 97mm / 11.6g | Topwater (floating) | Large water bodies, walk-the-dog for bass, medium retrieve speed |
| GDFP01 | 75mm / 7g | Floating Pencil | General topwater fishing, finesse walk-the-dog, ponds and smaller lakes |
| GDSP02 | 80mm / 16g | Sinking Pencil | Heavy cover, deep fish, count-down technique for suspended bass |
How to Walk the Dog: Step-by-Step
The Rod Position
Point your rod tip down toward the water at a 45-degree angle. This gives you maximum range of motion for the side-to-side wrist action. If the rod tip is too high, the lure won't walk properly.
The Cadence
- Cast to your target area (lily pads, grass edges, laydowns, points)
- Wait 3-5 seconds after the splash-down. Let the rings dissipate
- Give the rod a sharp, downward twitch to the left. The lure should dart left
- Immediately reel in the slack line
- Give a sharp, downward twitch to the right. The lure darts right
- Continue this left-right-left-right cadence while maintaining steady reel speed
- Every 5-8 twitches, pause for 2-3 seconds. Many strikes happen on the pause
Common Mistakes
- Twitching with the arm instead of the wrist: Use your wrist only. Arm movements are too large and create slack line
- Not reeling fast enough: You must reel in slack between twitches or the lure won't move
- Using too stiff a rod: A medium-action rod with some tip flex allows better wrist-powered twitches
- Rod tip too high: Kills the side-to-side action. Keep it at 45 degrees or lower
When to Fish Pencil Lures
Best Conditions
- Water temperature: 65-85°F (18-29°C) — bass are active on the surface
- Time of day: Early morning, late evening, and overcast days
- Water surface: Calm or slight ripple. Heavy wind makes walk-the-dog difficult
- Location: Over shallow flats, grass beds, lily pads, boat docks, and submerged points
When Pencil Lures Outperform Poppers
| Situation | Choose Pencil | Choose Popper |
|---|---|---|
| Finicky, non-aggressive fish | Yes — subtle action | No — too aggressive |
| Clear water | Yes — natural presentation | Maybe — natural colors only |
| Heavy cover (dense weeds) | No — can't work through thick grass | Yes — pops above the grass |
| Post-cold-front fish | Yes — subtle twitching triggers strikes | No — too loud |
| Schooling fish (breaking surface) | Yes — fast walk-the-dog covers area | Yes — loud pops call fish in |
The Sinking Pencil: A Different Approach
The GDSP02 (80mm / 16g Sinking Pencil) is a unique tool. Unlike floating pencils that stay on the surface, the sinking pencil descends through the water column when paused. This opens up entirely different possibilities:
- Count-down targeting: Count the lure down to reach fish at specific depths (1 second = approximately 1 foot of descent)
- Suspended fish: When bass are holding at mid-depth and refusing both topwater and bottom presentations, a sinking pencil fished at their level is deadly
- Heavy baitfish schools: When baitfish are suspended, a sinking pencil matches the depth zone perfectly
