Pencil Bait Fishing: Techniques and Tips for Surface Success
2026-05-20 | GD Angling Tackle

Pencil baits are among the most exciting surface lures in fishing. Their unique "walk the dog" action creates a hypnotic side-to-side swimming motion that drives predatory fish crazy. Mastering pencil bait techniques will open up a whole new dimension of topwater fishing.
Understanding Pencil Baits
A pencil bait is a slim, elongated hard lure without a diving lip. When fished correctly, it glides from side to side across the surface, mimicking a wounded baitfish struggling to escape. This action is known as "walking the dog."
The Walk the Dog Retrieve
The walk the dog technique is the foundation of pencil bait fishing:
1. Cast the lure to your target area
2. Point your rod tip toward the lure (roughly 45 degrees from horizontal)
3. Use short, sharp downward snaps of the rod tip while taking up slack with the reel
4. Each snap should cause the lure to dart to one side
5. Alternate the direction of snaps to create the zigzag walking pattern
6. Maintain steady cadence — do not pause between glides
The key is in the rod tip movement. Keep the motion short and sharp, and maintain consistent slack management. Too much slack and you lose control; too little and the lure will not glide properly.
